
Moving from Generic Tubes to Your Own UV Brand
When you stop buying off-the-shelf tubes and start building your own UV brand, the conversation changes. You stop worrying about just “wattage” and start obsessing over the things that actually keep people safe and the product working. We’re talking about UV-C lamps. They hit that 253.7 nm sweet spot—which is great for killing germs, but pretty brutal on human skin and eyes if you get it wrong.
Getting the Output Right
We build these lamps with some very tight tolerances. It’s a balancing act between the mercury vapor pressure and how thick the quartz glass is. If the glass is too thick? You lose power. If it’s too thin? The lamp will probably shatter the first time a delivery driver drops the box. And please, don’t overlook the ballast. It has to match the lamp’s starting voltage perfectly. If they aren’t in sync, you’ll deal with flickering or electrodes that burn out way too fast. It’s a headache you just don’t want.
Safety is Everything
You can’t treat safety as an “extra.” It’s the whole point. For an OEM product, your housing has to be a fortress against UV leakage. We stick to high-grade aluminum or plastics that won’t get brittle and crack under constant radiation. But the real secret is the fail-safes. I always suggest adding PIR sensors or magnetic door switches. The goal is simple: the second a person walks into the room or opens a door, the power cuts. Period.
The Tug-of-War: Power vs. Life
Here’s the trade-off: high-output lamps kill germs faster, but they chew through the electrodes. If you push for maximum intensity to make the sterilization cycle shorter, your customers are going to be replacing tubes a lot more often. We try to find a middle ground by tweaking the gas fill and the electrode coating so you get the best of both worlds. One last thing—don’t cheap out on the wiring. Use high-temperature leads. These lamps get hot, and cheap wires will just crack over time. Also, give the unit some room to breathe. If the heat builds up, your spectral output shifts and your efficiency tanks.
